THRU Project

IMPACT STORY
Liz’s Story

Before entering foster care, Liz lived in an unsafe, unstable environment. After entering the system at 16, she felt trapped and struggled to adapt. A turning point came when she was told she’d be moved to San Antonio. Rather than running away as planned, she embraced this new beginning, adopting a new identity as “Liz.”

Liz’s journey with THRU Project began through a friend’s introduction. After joining the college housing program, having her own space and control felt surreal, allowing her to focus on healing. Since then, Liz has achieved major milestones: landing her first job as a P.A.T.H. intern, being featured on KSAT News, speaking at Texas Educational Reach, earning cybersecurity certifications, transferring to UTSA, and securing a Crime Analysis internship with Opportunity Home. When she totaled her car, she had the financial stability to buy a new one, a testament to the support THRU Project provided.

She credits a change in perspective as the greatest factor in finding peace. “Acceptance is the hardest thing a human being can do,” she says, but it was key to unlocking peace of mind. Looking ahead, she dreams of building her own house and giving back to organizations like THRU Project, using her voice to inspire others.

For young adults leaving foster care, Liz advises, “Don’t be scared of what comes next. Become the light if you are not able to find it.” She also recommends reaching out for help and not letting negative thoughts take over.

Liz’s story is one of triumph over adversity. Thanks to your generosity, she has transformed her life, turning pain into purpose, and becoming a beacon of hope for others. Her healing journey wouldn’t be possible without support from donors like you.
